New Moon and Full Moon are perfect times to deepen your internal practices. Think of it as a time when the inner temple opens its gate to receive you inward. Yogis are encouraged to incorporate (more) pranayama, meditation, self-inquiry and purification practices. The moon creates strong tides in the ocean, and it does effect us more strongly then other times. By the same token, if we injure ourselves during these times (particularly the Full Moon), the injuries can also be stronger than usual. Please do be extra mindful and attentive with your asana practice.

Jennifer Calkin, PhD* , a poet and an evolutionary biologist who teaches and conducts research at the UW. Nicholas Corrin, L.Ac. Practices Vibrational, Oriental and Ayurvedic medicine. Both write scientifically and beautifully about the natural world and animals. Their essays are about reawakening our connection to the natural realm. For me, this is a way of practicing and teaching yoga. Because by learning about other kingdoms and species, we realize how every living being is the sacred thread that holds the mystery together. Works like these inspire me to remember the meaning of union, the power and the responsibility that we have, to make a difference in the world.
Jen:
“…Though this species is so dramatic in size and coloration that it is called the Lord God bird (people shout “Lord God, what a bird!” when they see it) it has managed to slip in and out of the view of humans for several years until, in the 1930s, it seemingly disappeared from view…”

Nick:
“It is in the heart alone that we can know what the world is made of, for the world is made up not only of atoms and molecules, nor even only of cosmic vibrations, the world is constantly generated and sustained by an outpouring of love. In the silence of meditation, in the silent reflections of the heart, freed from all internal chatter, we can, if we but listen carefully, sense this. And this same love will open up our hearts as it opens up a rosebud…”*
